NVDB contains official information about roads and is used for many purposes. It forms the basis for route planning, accessibility and management – and ensures that both you and your vehicle's navigation system have updated speed limits. It also ensures that the emergency services know where a serious accident has occurred and how to get to the scene as quickly as possible.

NVDB consists of large amounts of data, which in most cases is freely available to both national and international stakeholders.

NVDB contains information about the entire road network – both public and private roads. The road network and road data (both physical elements such as signs and guardrails and digital data such as speed limits and traffic volumes) are combined into a digital representation of the physical road network, with both geometry and topology.

The National Road Database consists of:

  •  National reference system
A common system for indicating position along the road network. All road objects in NVDB are located on the basis of this system.
  • Linear referencing service
Enables the linking of technical data and incidents to the correct location on the road network. This ensures that all information in NVDB has an accurate geographical position.
  • Digitally navigable road network
A coherent, digital road network that covers the entire country – from private roads to E- roads. Used for route planning and map services, among other things.
  • Inventory register
A common data source for road owners and managers. The register covers disciplines such as roads, bridges, electrical, as well as water and sewage. Through an agreement with KS, municipalities are required to use NVDB as an inventory register.
  • Services for viewing, retrieving, registering and updating data
NVDB offers services that allow users to explore data in maps, retrieve data via API, and register or change information in the database.
  • Data catalogue
The regulations that define which road objects and properties are to be registered in NVDB – and how the registration is to be carried out. The Data catalogue ensures uniform and correct data collection across stakeholders.
